Fast and Friendly Car Donation Service
Is it time to finally let go of your old car? Don’t worry. Your vehicle is still valuable…in fact, it means the world to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The Arc can take your old car as a donation and turn it into cash to directly help them with their needs such as employment, education, housing and advocacy to ensure they are treated with dignity and respect. Your vehicle donation benefits The Arc of Howard County to promote and protect the rights of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities so they can live, learn, work and play as valued and contributing members of their communities. It doesn’t matter if your old car has some blemishes, a little rust, a dead battery or worse. Our Car Donation Program can take your donation and turn it into cash at auction and the proceeds are put to good use right in your community. Plus, you get a tax break!

The Arc of Howard County and The Arc of the United States have partnered with Melwood Charity Car Donation Center, a non-profit agency to manage and operate our vehicle donation program. Since 1963, Melwood has provided job training and employment for over 2,000 people with disabilities.
Vehicle donations made to The Arc are tax-deductible. Our organization has been designated by the IRS as a 501c (3) charity. The best practice is to consult with a tax professional on how to maximize your tax deduction since every car donation and tax situation is unique. In general, the IRS limits the tax deduction to the gross proceeds from the sale of the car, truck, or other vehicle. Charitable contributions must be itemized on Schedule A of Form 1040 to qualify. If the gross proceeds exceed $500, Form 1098C “Contributions of Motor Vehicles, Boats, and Airplanes” and Form 8283 “Noncash Charitable Contributions“, must also be completed and attached. Forms 1098C and 8283 will be provided to the donor within 30 days of the sale of the vehicle as a requirement.
To learn more about what the donors’ responsibilities are prior to making a car donation, please consult the “Donors Guide to Vehicle Donations“ found in IRS Publication 4303. The file may be readable with Adobe Reader.
