Advocate

Promoting Full Community Life

Although attitudes about individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities have improved over the years, ignorance, misconceptions and prejudice still exist. Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities have become their own advocates, organizing and speaking before local groups and elected officials, even testifying at hearings for more funding for programs and services. View the sign up page for The Arc of Howard County’s news, happenings, and events newsletter.

The Arc has a very active Governmental Affairs Committee, which meets monthly. If you are interested in serving on this committee, contact Executive Director Cindy Parr by phone 410-730-0638 Ext. 225 or email cparr@archoward.org. View the sign up page for Legislative Updates to stay informed about legislative issues in the Maryland General Assembly.

Family members, staff and community activists also promote full community life for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The Arc recognizes individuals and groups who put the mission statement of The Arc into practice at an annual awards ceremony.

For information about our self-advocacy group, People Power of Howard County, contact Jill Berry at jberry@archoward.org or call 410-730-0638 Ext. 229. View the People Power of Howard County page.
