The Arc of Howard County’s mission statement is: “Achieving full community life for people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities – one person at a time.” The Arc of Howard County seeks to recognize individuals and groups who put our mission statement into practice.

The 2022 Celebration of Excellence categories for nomination are:
- Self-Advocate of the Year – This award will be presented to the individual who has made considerable strides in his/her personal or professional life in the last year.
- Excellence in Employment – This award will be presented to the employer who has made a difference in the work life of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities by developing programs and work opportunities resulting in achievement in their professional lives.
- Excellence in Professional Services – This award will be presented to an individual or a company that provided professional services to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities with compassion and dignity, always taking into consideration the needs of the individual.
- Excellence in Community – This award will be presented to an individual or group that has developed programs for inclusion of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the local community or to an individual who worked to include people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in their communities or who consistently supports The Arc’s mission of full community life.
- Excellence in Public Service – This award will be presented to individuals or groups in the public eye who make special efforts to increase understanding of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and/or who advocate for improvement of services available to them. Potential nominees include elected representatives, government officials, community leaders and the media.
- Excellence in Schools – This award will be presented to a school or schools for its (their) successful inclusion of students with intellectual and developmental disabilities into the regular activities of the school. Of special interest are new ideas that the school is using to implement the best practices of inclusive education.
- Volunteer of the Year – This award will be presented to an individual or group who volunteered their time and services to better the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
