Who We Are

The Arc of Howard County has a long history of improving the lives of children and adults with developmental disabilities, primarily mental retardation, and their families. The Arc has been providing services and supports for over 40 years. We are the oldest and largest private non-profit membership organization providing services and supports to individuals with developmental disabilities in Howard County.

A developmental disability is not an illness, but rather a condition that causes some people to develop intellectually and socially at a slower rate than most other people. It cuts across the lines of racial, ethnic, educational, social and economic backgrounds and can occur in any family.

The Arc of the United States tells us that one family out of ten will be directly affected by mental retardation. Because of the nature of the disability we often form life long relationships with the people we support and their families… providing assistance and support when the need arises.
