Former Howard County Executive Charles Ecker and his wife, Peggy, were honored by The Arc of Howard County at the fifth annual Jim Greenfield Compassionate Leadership Award benefit on June 28.
The award recognizes Columbia Builders president Jim Greenfield’s service to The Arc as a volunteer and donor and is presented annually to a person or couple who have made significant contributions to the community.
This year’s benefit garnered $50,000 to fund programs and services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Over 200 people attended the event, which featured civic leaders and family members, who paid tribute to the popular couple.
Among the speakers were Chip Lundy of Williamsburg Homes, Michael W. Davis of Davis Agnor Rapaport and Skalny and Bev Wilhide, who is currently living in Florida but came to honor her former boss. Wilhide was the Chief Assistant to Ecker when he was county executive. One of the Eckers’ sons, Don, and a grandson, Brett, also reminisced about the couple. Richard Story, Senior Vice President for Marketing for JPB Partners, was the master of ceremonies.
Entertainment included the Golden Girls, and Chuck Ecker auctioned off a bicycle donated by Princeton Sports. The Premiere Sponsor was Williamsburg Homes.
